The internet is full of websites that claim to help you make money online or earn residual income. The problem is, 95% of these websites are simply scams or MLM schemes that want to take your money. I have spent the last two years scouring the web in search of legitimate ways to make money online. Only a select few websites actually back up their claims and really do provide results and I have listed these websites on my blog – Residuals and Royalties.

There are three ways that I prove to my readers that I am actually earning a profit from these websites and I will list each one for you. These three forms of “proof” help my readers have a little faith that if they put some effort into these websites, they WILL get paid. The three ways that I prove my earnings are: screen shots, check proof videos and auto-calculating banners.

Proof of Earnings Screen Shots: Every time I get a payout from a website, I usually like to take a screen shot of my earnings to post on my blog for the world to see. The only downside to screenshots is the fact that they can easily be photoshopped or changed, which causes some people to be skeptical of my earnings. I can tell you that I don't have the time or interest in trying to photoshop my screenshots.

Check Proof Videos: To further prove my earnings to others, I like to take videos of the checks that I receive in the mail from various sources. Not all of the websites that I work with provide actual paper checks, but when they do – I always record a video of the check. If you do the same, be sure and cover the personal information like you address, the check number and anything else you don’t want visible to the public. There are two primary checks that I have been video taping every month – my CashCrate check and my Google Adsense check.

Auto-Calculating Banners: I have a CashCrate banner atop my Residuals and Royalties blog that automatically updates when my earnings change. This banner shows the exact number of referrals I have made and how much money I have earned for the month as well as my total earnings overall. This banner is an excellent way to prove my earnings, since I have no way of altering the figures.

We've all read, seen or heard something that we simply had to pass on. When things go viral, they can generate enormous amounts of traffic. And from massive amount of traffic, cash can be earned. Amuse me

The page, which has a comic twist to a serious subject, offers readers a chance to laugh. A piece of potentially dry subject matter has been given a sprinkling of humour. Jokes are one of the oldest forms of viral communication - think of all those "have you heard the one about...?" gags. Most people are surfing for entertainment, so give them what they want.

Stay on topic

Twitter is a great illustration of how certain subjects can trend, and other media outlets have similar obsessions each day. If you can exploit one of these spikes in interest, your page will have a far greater chance. Remember it is easier to ride the wave, than create your own ripples. This page followed other high profile campaigns in the UK on the same subject matter, and so latched onto the surge.

Be original

Firstly, and perhaps most importantly the page described an idea that was original - never attempt to promote copied content virally, as it will flop. But this doesn't mean you need to be completely original, so don't panic. Seeing an existing idea in a new light, or from a different angle is the best way to brainstorm some ideas.

Draw me a picture

A picture is worth a 1000 words, and perhaps double that when it comes to online viral marketing. This page's photo of the rogue flyer in-store grabs the attention, and draws the reader in. Many virals are indeed only photos - but remember this means that they can then be passed around the web without reference to the original site... which means no advert revenue. So it's best to try and give the user a reason to pass on the URL of your page, rather than just the content.

Be f***ing controversial

Most gossip is based on controversial subjects, and the same applies to many of the best viral ideas. You want to stimulate interest and debate, and it ultimately doesn't matter if your reader loves or hates your opinion so long as they pass it on. So perhaps this page's message to subversively drop flyers into the store struck a nerve with the audience.

If you're reading this post there's a decent chance you're interested in making more money from your online writing. Whether you have your own blog or post on revenue sharing sites, the key is to maximise the return from each article published. So here are my the top 5 tips for optimising your copy, drawn from my experience of the best pages on Wikinut.

Grab your reader
------------------------------------
Each page you write should begin with an eye-catching headline - this starts the ball rolling. Make it interesting, give it an angle.

A recent Wikinut example - "The Healthy Computer Geek's Diet" - short, snappy and contains keywords; it also brings together health and geeks, a clever niche.

But don't stop there... make sure you follow it up with a great first paragraph. This is your first chance to introduce a cliff hanger, a teasing line that will leave your reader wanting more. Let's face it, if your readers are already getting bored something is badly wrong.

Be positive
------------------------------------
Here's something I've noticed - authors that are upbeat tend to get better responses. This is a hard factor to quantify and measure, so you'll just have to take my word for it. Whether you're looking for advert clicks or sign-ups, putting your reader in a positive mindset seems to illicit results even if your article isn't directly asking them to respond.

A top page in our jobs section about writing a great CV ended with - "Good luck and stay positive. Eventually you will find that great job - just keep working at it."

If you think about it, when was the last time you saw a salesperson using a negative, unenthusiastic approach?

Give your reasons
------------------------------------
This may sound obvious but if you are attempting to directly influence somebody into acting on your words, make sure you give them a damn good reason. It's sometimes easy to lose focus on this as you struggle to compose your piece. People make decisions on the information they have to hand, and it's your job as the author to educate them.

This opening line from a page about starting an eBay business gives the reader reasons immediately - "Have you ever thought about running your own auction business? Like the freedom and flexibility that working for yourself offers?"

Show them the happy place
-----------------------------------
This is a classic technique and one that is worth remembering. Try to paint a picture in your reader's mind of them enjoying the product, or whatever it is you're offering. Take them beyond the act of response, which is often the biggest hurdle and help them imagine the benefits.

For example, a Wikinut page about hosting the perfect dinner party ended with the following line - "You are now (hopefully) the host(ess) with the most(ess). Bask in the praise. Go on, soak it up. You deserve it. Cheers!"

The reader cannot help but get enthused by this paragraph, and it's a great example of the approach.

Call to action
-----------------------------------
Finally, you should include at least 1 direct call to action in your piece, by which I mean an instruction to your reader. In fact, you can go even further and demand or even order your audience to respond! If you have successfully achieved the first 4 steps above, you should have them in the palm of your hand...
